Music artist, DJ and vibe curator Shygirl celebrated the launch of her new EP Club Shy Room 2 in the most Shy way possible: throwing the ultimate ClubShy (the party series that always pops off), “It’s a very special ClubShy because it’s the day of my release,” Shygirl said. With a DJ set of all the girls – in a lineup that included Shy herself, Sad Boi, Jorja Smith, Urumi, and more – and the London crowd went crazy.
“I’m really excited to do this party, and the parties will never stop,” she told us.
Just before her Boiler Room set, we got chatting with Shy in Room 2 (the room to be in), about her new drop, what she wants to see in the music industry, and, most importantly, what Shygirl smells like.
Talk us through your fit.
“My fit tonight is Coach, Coach, Coach. I have this beautiful leopard print jacket, I have been wearing a lot of leopard print lately, I’m very into something tactile, and then this cute pink dress, by Coach, which fits with my EP theme, which has been a lot of pink.”
What’s in your Coach bag rn?
“I have… I can have a look but I already know. I have my lip gloss, I have my phone – even though I will turn it off for the rest of the night – and I have mints because we never wanna be caught with smelly breath.”
Best style tip?
“The most important rule of life is to dress how you feel, and be comfortable. Doesn’t matter what you look like, as long as you feel good you’ll look great.”
What does Shygirl smell like?
“Guilty by Gucci, that is my signature scent. And if you smell it, you know I’m somewhere in here.”
What’s your go-to night out?
“It’s kind of exclusive because it would be the afterparty at my house, and all my friends know it’s the top spot to be.”
Got any pre-show rituals?
“I try and keep it spontaneous as much as possible. I think that’s a good habit to get into because you never know what the night is going to be like. Bit of spontaneity keeps you on your toes.”
What inspires you?
“The thing that inspires me the most while making music is just to have everything all at once, I get bored really easily and I need to have a taste of everything that I enjoy, and I think I bring that out when I’m making tracks.”
What do you want to see in the music industry?
“In the music industry I would really love to see less evil music execs, I think we’re on a path to kind of a better future where artists have more of a say in the trajectory of their career, the audience is way more present, it’s easier to contact your favourite artist now, and that’s important, the bygone era of evil record labels should be on its way out.”
Top three favourite artists rn?
“My top three favourite artists would be, first of all they’re a duo so maybe I’m cheating a little bit, but it’s Confidence Man and I love Sevdaliza, she’s about to release some new music so I can’t wait, and also Eartheater, we actually have a single coming out next month.”
Dream collab?
“I would really love to collaborate with Rosalía or Miley Cyrus, they’re my top two.”
What’s your favourite track on Club Shy Room 2?
“My favourite track on my new EP is ‘Wifey Riddim’ because it’s the ultimate girl gang – we have Jorja Smith and Sad Boi and Shygirl, me!”
And lastly, bit deep, but what’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Actually, I already know… The best life advice I’ve ever received was when it was my first day at school and my dad told me that I needed to learn how to enjoy my own company before expecting anyone else to enjoy it. I think it’s a really good lesson and it’s made me cultivate an amazing personality.”
