Maison Margiela has brought back the Future from the archives, the cult high-top sneaker that had all the swag mfers in a chokehold.
Let’s rewind to a time where low-profile shoes didn’t have the clout they have today. A time where we liked them thick. In the 2010s one silhouette reigned supreme: the high-top. We were flexing with Nike Air Jordan 1s, snapbacks, ripped skin-tight jeans and a dream. The dream in question? Learning how to dougie.
The future was bright: we YOLOed, we hollered, we still had Mac Miller, Drake was making “Headlines”, Tyga was rolling up with “Rack City”, and Zendaya was swagging it out. We were young, wild and free. The Maison Margiela Future was first introduced as part of Margiela’s SS11 collection, during the prime time of the swag era. Its silhouette features a sleek yet chunky design, steering away from traditional laces and incorporating wide straps and a concealed fastening system instead. Peak avant-garde futurism, with the high-top adding to the drama of it all. The Margiela Future became a cult silhouette in the streetwear culture of the time, bolstering swag to luxury fashion.
As Fashion Roadman mentioned on a recent TikTok, there’s a new street style wave on TikTok that references the swag era. And the Margiela team must be watching. Maison Margiela announced the Future’s comeback on IG two days ago, bringing back in solid black and white colourways. Its drop coincided with today’s Maison Margiela SS26 show, which featured a mirror glaze Future model, and more swag elements like tight leathers, ripped jeans and tucked trousers into Futures. Is Glenn Martens guiding us into a new swaggy era?
The Future sneaker drops today in black and white at maisonmargiela.com, Maison Margiela flagship stores, and Dover Street Market.
