Every now and then, a sub-culture inspired style pierces into and dominates the fashion scene - think of the Bape-wearing hypebeasts between 2005 and 2015. But if you’re Gen-Z then you probably know the aesthetic of the past few years; that of the e-boy, e-girl or e-anyone.
Popularised on TikTok by influencers like Lil Huddy, Noen Eubanks and Xepher Wolf, the style revisits the early 2000s emo scene while incorporating elements of gaming culture. Essentially, it’s an internet-approved edgy look.
Spotting the aesthetic is not difficult. One quick scroll through the for you page and you will see Gen-Z influencers in striped shirts, platform boots and excessive amounts of statement rings and chain necklaces lip-syncing to MGK-type music. The hair is also a crucial element to the aesthetic, often being dyed jet black or having bleach blonde strips matched with pink, purple or green (or any out-of-the-box colour for that matter). Noone with the style shies away from makeup, often experimenting with bold eyeshadows, eyeliners and nail polish.
While many doubt the longevity of the trend, it is important to note that the term e-girl was around since the early 2000s. Though used as a derogatory term then, e-girls and e-boys have made a comeback, reclaiming the meaning of the label. They have created an immediately identifiable style - and not just on TikTok. Gen-Zs everywhere have, to a certain degree, adopted the style, whether that is simply adding more jewellery to their outfits or going all out with band tees and leather jackets. Although the rise of the e-boy/e-girl/e-anyone happened rather quickly, the style is here to stay - at least for a little while longer.
