Tailoring is arguably one of fashion’s finest arts, and it's one that Hedi Slimane is revolutionising at Celine. Since being appointed as Celine’s Creative Director in 2018, the French designer’s taken the brand in a new direction renowned for his slim, tailored silhouettes, but it’s not a look he’s only now conquering. Hedi Slimane’s tailoring has always been God tier; here’s why.
Looking at Celine's Homme Summer 25 film, “The Bright Young,” you’ll find a quintessentially English style that once was the uniform of the country’s elite. Shot against the backdrop of Norfolk’s Holkham Hall, the collection spotlights trimmed boating blazers and military jackets, in a more refined take on Slimane’s tailoring style that previously appeared as indie sleaze style leather pants.

One of Hedi Slimane’s greatest talents is taking motifs from a certain era and painting them in his own light, evident in many of his designs, from tapered derbies to skinny jeans. And in this collection, Slimane looked far further back than the indie scene, referencing 18th-century writer Louis-Sebastien Mercier’s line “it is now fashionable among young people to copy the English style when dressing.” From military-inspired codes appearing on jackets to pleated Keith pants and club blazers, tailoring in Celine’s latest collection follows a sartorial British summer style, inspired by the prep of classic school uniforms and 20th century London scene.

Considering how skilful Hedi Slimane is when it comes to tailoring, you might not know that he actually has zero formal training in fashion. Whilst his past stints at fashion houses undeniably shaped Slimane’s approach to tailoring, the infamous “skinny” silhouette he’s now known for at Celine has always been ingrained in his style.
12: Despite Hedi Slimane swapping physical runway shows in favour of digital film releases at Celine, his storytelling and attention to detail in every collection is what makes these short films so immersive. The house doesn’t need to put on shows because their videos are as epic and immersive as a Hollywood movie.

Even in Slimane’s latest collection, this old money English aesthetic is practically cinematic, from the English landmark Celine used as its backdrop down to the set dressing in the film. But amidst the leather-seated bicycles, wicker baskets, and canoes Slimane designed for Celine’s latest film, nothing ever distracts from his tailoring. From military-inspired codes appearing on jackets to pleated Keith pants and club blazers, tailoring in Celine’s latest collection follows a sartorial British summer style, inspired by the prep of classic school uniforms and 20th century London scene.
This season’s aesthetic might differ from the leather-clad punks of Fall 2023 or the rock-and-roll bikers of Fall 2024, it's not a far cry from Hedi Slimane’s past collections, particularly when you look at the tailoring. Through every era Slimane is inspired by, from the grunge of ‘90s New York to the grit of ‘60s Hollywood, his sleek, slim silhouettes remain consistent.
