Erykah Badu and young designer Myah Hasbany go way back

Last week, neo-soul legend Erykah Badu wore this young designer to accept the Billboard Icon Award, but it’s not the first time the two have worked together.

Texas-born Myah Hasbany is currently in their final year at Central Saint Martins here in London, and is already creating garments for the icon of the year. The young designer has been working with Badu for five years now, having met randomly at their high school where Badu (an alumnus) went to audition for dancers. Hasbany got the audition, and stayed in touch with Badu ever since.

Myah Hasbany focuses a lot on crochet and knitwear-work, pushing boundaries by building structural pieces that revolve around proportions. Their work for the Billboard Awards, aka “the booty suit”, really exaggerated that. This was a collaborative project with Badu herself – it took Hasbany over a year on-and-off to make – built from individual crocheted body parts pieced together.

Some say the suit references the history of slavery, others see it as a nod to the Venus of Willendorf, while some others see it as a commentary on body dysmorphia. This is crazy next-level artistry fr. Myah Hasbany is definitely one to watch.
