SUNNEI returned to Milan Fashion Week with a collection that gave power to the people. Models took to an unusual catwalk, posing on a podium to have their looks rated by guests in a show that felt more Strictly Come Dancing than the women’s fashion season.
Layering is featured throughout, with ruched detailing seen on an olive floor-length dress, giving the illusion of two pieces being worn together, gently broken up with deeper green detailing to the bust.
Models wore skirts with tassels fraying with movement, paired with a navy tank top and a loosely worn satchel, which was worn low across the body. Its thick leather strap added further texture, channelling a “too cool for school” energy.
Other looks paired deep blue leather jackets with a high-necked top in a lighter shade, complete with darker navy accents and a black contrast stitch skirt which fell below the knee. Green framed glasses, complete with a blue lens, accessorised the look further with ribbed knitted heels featuring a purple and navy closed-toe upper and lime-green detailing, working with a small rubber heel with studded rubber accenting.
The looks presented felt androgynous and spoke to the roots of the brand, which originally started as a menswear label in 2015 and showed its first womenswear collection in 2018. Founded by Loris Messina and Simone Rizzo, SUNNEI is an escape from the 9-5 and allows the pair to do something for themselves.
The instant feedback provided at the show felt like a welcome change to the fashion system and in keeping with the SUNNEI brand, developed on Instagram and known for its contemporary approach, whilst still crafting its clothes authentically, with collections produced in Italian factories.
For SS24, SUNNEI brought the ruthlessness and instant criticism of the Instagram livestream closer to home. Looks were practical, fusing utilitarian influences with a high-fashion opulence as it served clothing perfectly crafted for the metropolis. By inviting attendees to take part in the show, it proved once again that SUNNEI is one of the most exciting emerging brands on the Milan fashion calendar that continues to keep us on our toes.
