Katy Perry just went to space (literally)

For most of us, it’s just another Monday afternoon of doing the same thing you do every week (except rewatching some Coachella highlights) but it couldn’t be more different for Katy Perry because she’s just gone to space.

Even though she was only up there for 11 minutes, she boarded the Blue Origin rocket called New Shepard with an all-female crew handpicked by Jeff Bezos which included his wife Lauren Sánchez, CBS presented Gayle King, Nasa rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn. The journey was fully automated too which is probably for the best - can’t really imagine Katy Perry operating a whole rocket.

But why was she in space in the first place? Well, Blue Origin is a private space company that was started by Bezos back in 2000 and it gives people a chance to go to space for just $150,000 (lol). Although there’s the novelty and tourism aspect of being able to go to space if you want to spend the money, Blue Origin is also developing long-term space infrastructure like reusable rockets and lunar landing systems.

Katy Perry and Lauren Sánchez definitely weren’t going to let their big moment be ruined by those oversized, unflattering space suits so they got themselves and the crew kitted out in custom, slimmer space suits designed by Oscar De La Renta. Perry said it best: “We’re putting the ass in astronaut.”

So maybe she does live up to her lyrics - after all, she said something about shooting “across the sky” on Firework.
