Kanye West is dropping a documentary: here’s what you need to know

Rumours have been circulating about Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) dropping a doc in 2025, following his life in and out the studio, but it’s kind of hard to know what’s true. For the real Ye fans, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about his documentary so far, bc we gotchu.

Up until recently we didn’t know a lot about the film, apart from that it was set to drop some time in 2025. The doc was announced by film director Nico Ballesteros - the fly on the wall director known for shooting Playboi Carti’s “M3tamorphosis” music video in 2020 - and has reportedly been in the works for the past six years.

Titled In Whose Name?, Variety reported back in November that the doc will aim to offer “a unique and cinematic perspective on Ye’s public transformation,” something we all want to know more about fr. However, like we said, there wasn’t a lot of info going round. In the same article, Variety dropped the doc’s synopsis, which reads:

“With a billion-dollar budget and a commitment to truth, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, invites 18-year-old Nicolas Ballesteros armed with an iPhone on a six-year journey revealing unfiltered aspects of celebrity life, which confront the provocative opinions, grand visions and bold contrarianism that defined him as the world’s most controversial artist. The film follows Ye’s ascent to becoming the richest Black man in American history while uncovering why the superstar risked everything he had built in the name of freedom.”

Apart from that, we’ve kind of been in the dark about what the documentary actually covers. Or at least, that was until last week, when Ballesteros took to IG to reveal a few things. Not only did he explain that the doc would be following Ye’s story since 2007, but he also posted a pic on IG in front of a screen that appeared to be playing the film itself. In the picture, it looks like Ye’s stood next to Daft Punk… “Stronger”??

We still don’t know the exact date the doc will be dropping - like how we never know what Ye will drop anything - but trust we’ll keep you updated.
