Demna is the new artistic director at Gucci

Breaking news: Demna has been named the new artistic director at Gucci. The Balenciaga CD is moving to the Italian house, following Sabato de Sarno’s departure in February. He will be departing from his Balenciaga role after his final couture show in July, parent company Kering announced today (just a few hours after Donatella stepped down from Versace).

“I am truly excited to join the Gucci family,” Demna said in the release. “It is an honour to contribute to a house that I deeply respect and have long admired. I look forward to writing together with Stefano [the Gucci CEO] and the whole team a new chapter of Gucci’s amazing story.”

The 43-year-old Georgian-born designer has been at the Balenciaga chair since 2015, where he switched up the house codes to the hard Eastern European and ironic aesthetic (of Ikea bags, Lays crisp clutches and Erewhon collabs) that has become synonymous with the Balenciaga we know today. It’ll be very interesting to see how the Parisian house will evolve without Demna. Demna’s successor will be dropping soon.

We’re also very interested to see what Demna cooks at Gucci – the new Gucci era will be crazy. If anyone remembers, the two houses collabed back in 2021, in a very unique linkup that was a hard hybrid of Gucci’s offbeat aesthetic of the time and Balenci’s cold vibe.
