CULTED SOUNDS
WHAT THE TEAM LISTENED TO IN JULY
Nothing brings community together quite like music. Whether you’re in the know with the latest emerging artists or just like the stuff you hear on the radio, there’s no greater feeling than being with a group of people, be it your mates or complete strangers, and vibing to the same tune. It’s why we have missed clubs and the sweaty atmosphere of gigs so much over the past year and a half. To celebrate a month of great music and the lifting of lockdown restrictions in the UK, we saw no better time to launch our latest CULTED SOUNDS series.
To kickstart the series, the CULTED team have each chosen their top songs of the past month, both old and new. Don’t be fooled by the cover image, we’re actually not that sh*t (promise). Expect to hear Kanye classics, the latest releases from Pop Smoke and Unknown T, as well as techno tunes, club classics and summer anthems. There’s basically something for everyone. So when you’re sat in the office or at home with friends not knowing what to play on the AUX (we’ve all been under that immense pressure) rest assured, this playlist will satisfy the tastes of every music novice and wannabe Disc Jockey. Don’t believe us? Play it. And give us a follow.

UNKNOWN T – GOODUMS (2021)
Unknown T isn’t taking any breaks at the moment, he released his M Huncho collaboration “Wonderland” earlier in June, then walked Virgil Abloh‘s Louis Vuitton Menswear SS22 collection show at Paris Fashion Week and then made his debut appearance on COLORS STUDIOS to perform this brand new single – “Goodums”. The video on COLORS’ channel has already been watched almost 600k times, I probably contributed to this number massively. I’ve had the track play on repeat. Why? Because his energy is cold and he attacks the drill beat with conviction. This track gets me in a good mood.

PEGGY GOU – I GO (2021)
This is a classic Peggy tune to accompany the long, hot and hazy July days. The perfect beat for your morning workout, a pick-me-up to get you out of that 4pm work slump, and the ideal ‘get ready to go out to the first club night in 16 months’ kinda track. Brush your teeth to it, eat your pasta to it; wherever you listen, it’s a nostalgic 90’s techno banger that puts you in a good mood. What’s not to love about that. P.S the album art gives it extra points too.

POP SMOKE FT PHARRELL – SPOLIED (2021)
Pop Smoke’s recognisable vocals have been missed since his tragic passing in February 2020, be it tracks like “Welcome to the Party” and “Dior” that became party essentials in 2020 or more melodic, softer tracks like “what you know about love” and “Mood Swings”. In his first posthumous album release “Faith”, we see Pop collaborating with a number of new artists, namely Kanye West and Pusha T on “Tell The Vision” (which is a big tune) or Pharrell on “Spoiled”. Here we see Pop alongside Pharrell in his melodic, soulful mood, with the now 48-year-old, multi-faceted creative shining on a slow beat – this has been on repeat all week, and has caused me to go back in time and listen to some of Pharrell’s other classics. I also want to know whether or not Pharrell had any involvement in the production of “8-Ball”, as the beat SCREAMS Neptunes/Pharrell’s style.
JULIETTE
DJ FRESH – GOLD DUST SHY FX REMIX (2010)
You know when you listen to a song and you instantly think “This is the song I’m going to listen to to remember this period of my life”? Well, this is that song for me. Summer vibes and all that.

KANYE WEST- FATHER STRETCH MY HANDS PT 1 (2016)
With a new Kanye album just around the corner, it only seems right to pick a yeezy track this month. Nothing quite gets me riled up for summer like this classic Kanye track. If i’m not feeling up to going out, as soon as I hear that metro boomin’ tag I’m ready and raring to go – It’s like my kryptonite. 5 years after it’s release, it still has the same effect. I’m praying Ye releases Donda, though i’m not getting too excited – we all know how unreliable he is with his releases.
CHRIS
MUNGO’S HI-FI FT GARDNA & CATCHING CAIRO – BACK IN THE DAYZ (2021)
Nothing says summer like the sounds of Mungo’s Hi Fi blasting out of a massive sound system. With Notting Hill Carnival once again being postponed, it feels like forever since the UK’s best sound systems have taken to the sunny streets to showcase their latest summer anthems. Nonetheless, this hasn’t stopped Mungo’s Hi Fi from crafting an instant classic with a little help from two of the fastest rising vocalists in the game, Gardna and Catching Cairo. Early 2000’s synths, quick witted bars and a soulful Sunday morning sound from Cairo’s chorus…What more do you want?!

FRANGLISH, TORY LANEZ – MY SALSA (2020)
July’s theme for me has been European travel, so it’s only right that I highlight a top-tier European banger. French rapper Franglish and one of Canada’s finest, Tory Lanez, join forces on a catchy beat with a memorable guitar melody, to provide us with an instant club classic, currently being heard in parties all across the world. Definitely a tune that the U.K. massive ought to tap into.
