Culted Sounds: The comeback of the team playlist for summer

Sorry guys, we’ve been busy but we’re back with our Culted team playlist. For this week’s Culted Sounds, we’ve kept it in house with our very own team picking our own songs we’ve been listening to this month. Get ready because this playlist is janky as h*ll. From Tyler, The Creator to the Pixies, this playlist is a trip and a half because to be honest, our music taste is all over the place. At least we’re sure you’ll discover at least one song you’ve never heard before.

AURA

Lauryn Hill – I Gotta Find Peace of Mind (Live)

Lauryn Hill on repeat all year round, always. Her MTV unplugged version of ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’  was so raw and vulnerable,  many took it as a sign of weakness, but if anything it’s a symbol of strength and provides a sense of unity, especially amongst women and people of colour. Ms Lauryn Hill is for healingggggggg.

SAM

Ice Spice – Bikini Bottom

Srsly tho, how can I lose when I’m already chose? Enough said.

JULIETTE

Patti Smith – Dancing Barefoot

It’s the opening guitar strums, it’s the “heroin” reference that reminds you this song was born in a time of creative hedonism, it’s the superimposed spoken words of an existential poem that exposes Patti Smith as not just a musician but an artist at large (if you couldn’t tell yet, I want to be her). Released in 1979 as part of her second album with her group, “Wave”, the song is rumoured to be about Jeanne Héburaterne, the mistress of Amedeo Modigliani. While I don’t condemn cheating or home-wrecking, this song captures that feeling of falling in love without control and without choice. And it makes me want to dance barefoot in the park.

BECCA

Piero Piccioni – Endless Love

This is the perfect song to romanticise your life in summer. The soft tone of the jazz track is contrasted by the intensity you feel from its quick departure. Just long enough to wish for more, an endless love.

CHYNNA

Ice Cube – Today Was A Good Day

Summer hasn’t started if you ain’t got some throwback hip-hop tracks rotating in your playlists and nothing brings the vibe more than this track – absolute slapper. Ice cube describes this splendid day back in 1992 talking though all the pleasantly surprising things that happened to him throughout the day. The rapper states in the song ‘Today I didn’t even have to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day’ – I hope we all have many good days like Ice.

LUCA

Mario – Let Me Love You

An absolute classic Will have you trying to hit high notes like no body’s business

PROSPER

The Weeknd – House Of Balloons / Glass Table Girls

Delusional self confidence and an unhealthy summer romance, your love choice trying to make you jealous but you are glad they don’t need you. One day you’ll figure it out. Absolute banger!!

GEORGIA

Lil Simz – Gorilla

A lyrical genius, master of her field and definitely not rated enough by the primarily male dominated industry we are all witness of – she a big time drilllaaaaa. And don’t get me started on the video.

SHEYI

Robert Glasper – Smells Like Teen Spirit

Heaven to the ears, a neo-soul jazzy rendition of Nirvana’s classic!

SHAAN

Armand Van Helden – Summertime

Sounds like summer. Pulsing four on the floor drums with a warm bassline and feathery licks on a reverb-y guitar. Picture watching the sunset with a drink in hand while you have this on. Blisssssssssss.

ROBYN

The Weeknd, Playboi Carti, Madonna – Popular

If I’m one thing it’s a basic b*tch, and guess what, the basic b track of the summer just dropped. The Weeknd’s recent release titled “Popular” which went immediately viral on TikTok might actually be good enough to remedy the impact of his terrible acting in ‘The Idol’ – and that’s saying something. Featuring Playboi Carti – whose verse is literally laced with crack – and pop icon Madonna, the whole song is giving fun, 80s-inspired, summery vibes. Plus it’s relatable, considering that I’m also begging on my knees to be “Popular”. Jk.

JORDAN

Pixies – Where Is My Mind?

It’s 1:32am, I just dipped from the pull up as my social battery ran out. Currently reclining in an Uber Lux (iykyk). Texted my friend Hassan, popped some Pixies on, looking out the window pretending I’m in Fight Club & lowkey regretting all the choices which led me to this point.
