When Billie Eilish took to her Instagram to state “things are comingggg” a week ago, she wasn’t playing. The 19-year old singer turned to her socials to tease her upcoming single ‘Happier Than Ever’, including a 15 second TikTok. Eilish can be heard singing “When I’m away from you, I’m happier than ever” in a soft-lullaby tone reminiscent of a Lana Del Rey song.
This is the first time Eilish has given us an update on upcoming work since a snippet of the song was first heard in her Apple TV+ documentary The World’s A Little Blurry. In the documentary, Eilish and her brother Finneas were seen discussing the heart-wrenching lyrics, which are sure to be a turning point for the young artist.
The effects of the pandemic have been felt by every artist, Eilish included. In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, she admitted “I don’t think I would’ve made the same album, or even the album at all, if it weren’t for COVID”. Although news and updates are sparse, Eilish did announce a second album was in the works and possibly hinted in an Instagram Q&A that it will contain 16 tracks.
Since writing all of her upcoming tracks during lockdown, we are expecting a different side of the singer we haven’t seen before – perhaps a more vulnerable one, if that’s even possible. Eilish already showed us a new side of her; a platinum-hair-Billie. And if you’ve followed her career, you’ll know this is a completely new direction for the tom-boy. Perhaps this is the start of a new Billie Eilish era? Perhaps one where she is ‘Happier Than Ever’?
Seeing the instant success of her first album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, Eilish is bound to come back with more than just a couple of hits. And we cannot wait.
