Having reviewed Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson” and Kanye West & Jay Z’s “Otis” last week, we continue the series with another cult classic, this time from female rapper Lil’ Kim. “Kimnotyze” arrived as Lil’ Kim’s lead single on DJ Tomekk’s second studio album “Beat of Life Vol.1”, releasing exclusively in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. As such, the record has a mix of German and English lyrics – an interesting combination no doubt, but the song went on to be incredibly successful becoming Kim’s third consecutive top 10 hit after “Lady Marmalade” and “In the Air Tonite”.
“Gib’s mir richtig, ganz egal wo” is repeated throughout, meaning “Give it to me right, no matter where” – a clear indication of the song’s connotations. In terms of production, the song samples Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” and a re-interpreted chorus from Notorious B.I.G’s “Hypnotize”, while also featuring a melody from the German version of Sesame Street (believe it or not).
The video shows Lil Kim and DJ Tomekk in a few settings, all centered around motorsports: a monster truck crushing two cars, in front of a cocaine white Escalade – accompanied by the lyric “What you know about hydraulics on the escalade?” – as well as on a bridge doing donuts on sports bikes. Bouncing cars and oversized American flags aside, this song is iconic and unique in its own way, even if it’s based upon a B.I.G tune.
