Amazon has become the talk of the town in the luxury fashion world. Why? Because the retail giant stepped in, by partnering with Vogue and the CFDA, to provide a platform for 20 small fashion brands to sell their products.
Amazon offers an enormous platform to help designers shift merchandise that has, in a lot of cases, been sitting there for weeks due to the pandemic. But is Amazon really the right platform for emerging designers to be promoting their products?
Vanessa Friedman wrote for the New York Times “whether they like it or not, designers, especially small ones, have no real choice”.
Fashion historian Shelby Ivey Christie said that she loved “the idea of giving our American designers a digital storefront. However, Amazon as the partner is tone deaf”. And this seems to be what most people are saying about the launch, questioning everything from Amazon’s marketing to the target audience.
But nevertheless, Vogue and Amazon have created a storefront which will generate income for struggling designers and on top of this Amazon has also donated $500,000 to A Common Thread, Vogue and the CFDA’s industry-support initiative.
