Supreme has teamed up with Yohji Yamamoto on a new collection which has been released today. The FW20 collection features T-shirts, a shirt, blazer, sweaters, hoodies, and a variety of jackets, from leather look to puffers.
Details of the release came out on Monday but it’s fair to say that the reception was mixed. Many people accused the Japanese designer of ‘selling out’ or trying to make his brand look ‘cool’, being seemingly unaware of Yohyi’s historic contribution to fashion and streetwear. Nevertheless, the announcement caused outrage online.
But industry insiders have chimed in to give their opinion. Journalist Ayo Ojo took to Instagram to explain that the backlash makes “no sense”.
He explained:
“The Yohji universe has collaborated with an endless number of brands at this point (Adidas, Dr Martens, One Piece, Marilyn Monroe, New Era etc), [so] was a supreme collaboration that farfetched?”
Yohji has been gradually pushing towards a more commercial direction for the brand, so a collab with Supreme does make sense. And this isn’t the first luxury collaboration to come from Supreme. The brand’s Louis Vuitton and Jean Paul Gaultier collaborations were both huge successes and showed an elevation for Supreme from just streetwear.
So guys, what do you think of Yohji Yamamoto’s Supreme collection?
