As hype over the Yeezy/Gap partnership calms down, we reflect on why the collab might not be as shocking as it first appeared.
Gap has seen plummeting sales figures and has struggled to stay relevant throughout the last decade, but let’s not forget that the brand was once a streetwear power house back in the 90s and had huge pop culture appeal. And 90s nostalgia is a huge trend in today’s fashion.
And aside from the obvious advantages for Gap given Yeezy’s prominence in fashion, the 2 brands do have a lot in common despite initial appearances, like both brand’s influence on streetwear, as well as Gap’s history of celebrity cosigns.
But while there are clear advantages for Gap, what does Kanye have to gain?
Well, Kanye has already discussed his desire to make Yeezy more accessible to lower-income consumers. Back in March reports surfaced of a $60 Yeezy hoodie that Kanye is reportedly looking to sell in Walmart.
If the Gap x Yeezy collaboration is done right it looks like it could be set to be one of the most successful partnerships of recent years.
