It was announced yesterday that Virgil Abloh has raised $1M in support of scholarships for Black students. The money will provide scholarships for between 100 and 200 students of Black, African American, or African descent.
The designer partnered with the Fashion Scholarship fund to launch the Virgil Abloh “Post Modern” Scholarship Fund. Virgil said the “Post-Modern” term was added as not only will the chosen students receive funds, but they’ll also be granted access to “vital career support services and mentoring.”
So far Louis Vuitton, Farfetch, Evian and New Guards Group are the brands that have joined Abloh in donating money.
In a statement Virgil said:
“I’ve always been passionate about giving the next generation of students the same foundation for success that was given to me, that’s why I’m excited to launch this Fund in partnership with the FSF, which has an outstanding track record of helping college students achieve successful careers.”
Virgil reflected on his own experience of making his way as a Black designer and said he “wanted to make that door open for a younger generation to sort of have a pathway that stays open.”
