Victoria’s Secret was bought for approximately $955 million earlier this week. After weeks of rumours, Sycamore Partners announced last week that they will buy the lingerie company from L Brands. The private company Sycamore Partners will get 55% of Victoria’s Secret, while L Brands will keep 45%.
Les Wexner has stepped down from his role as chief exec of L Brands, the retail empire he created after purchasing Victoria’s Secret in 1982. Wexner faced public scrutiny for his close relationship with Jeffree Epstein, which was worsened by The New York Times investigation into the brand’s “culture of misogyny”.
It seems that Victoria’s Secret and scandals go hand-in-hand. Even this week they’ve come under fire after hundreds of bras were found in a bin behind a recently closed store. And let’s not forget former chief marketing officer Ed Razek’s comments that transgender women couldn’t sell the fantasy.
Society has changed, attitudes are more liberal and it’s no longer acceptable to run a brand on misogyny, with a lack of diversity. Look at brands like Glossier who got it right from the start and are now going from strength to strength.
Could new leadership rebuild the reputation of the once prestigious Victoria’s Secret?
