We all love a good meme, and social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are responsible for a couple of our favourites, but would you want them on a t-shirt?
Well, an emerging community of meme merchandisers are using Amazon to sell their t-shirts and hoodies with famous internet phrases like “And I oop-” or “Respect the drip, Karen”.
The founder of one of these meme merchandise companies, Jonathan Garriss, says to create the merch, they rely on more “youth-oriented platforms” like Reddit rather than Facebook, which usually recycles outdated memes.
Garriss says the trick is to find memes that have a little more staying power, and avoids the memes that are popular this week and not popular the next.
Using Amazon merch-maker to sell merch is also more cost-efficient than going through the whole process on their own, instead of wasting money on merchandise that could potentially flop after a meme dies out.
Like, have you seen a Rise and Shine meme lately?!
The key is to stay in-tune with what Gen Z’s are sharing.
So guys, would you buy a t-shirt with Michael Jordan’s crying face on?
Or is sharing it on Instagram with your friends enough for you?
