Last week, British artist Wiley posted a string of antisemitic tweets, prompting a twitter ‘walkout’, after the social media platform was criticised for not acting quickly enough against the hateful comments. Twitter has since suspended the grime artist’s account, and now some of the UK’s major artists are speaking out, in an open letter titled #NoSilenceInMusic.
The letter, signed by hundreds of artists including Niall Horan, Little Mix and Lewis Capaldi, states:
“Minorities from all backgrounds and faiths have struggled and suffered. From slavery to the Holocaust we have painful collective memories. All forms of racism have the same roots — ignorance, lack of education and scapegoating.”
The letter continued to say:
“We, the British music industry are proudly uniting to amplify our voices, to take responsibility, to speak out and stand together in solidarity. Silence is not an option”.
The letter was also endorsed by big labels, including Universal Music and Sony. Wiley’s social media accounts remain suspended, and a police investigation is underway for his antisemitism posts.
