Tuesday News Rush Featuring Global Blackout.
It’s CULTED with your Tuesday NEWS RUSH.
Today marks a global social media blackout to raise awareness of racial injustice and police brutality. The blackout is happening across all industries, with the music industry going one step further and halting operations completely today. The mission is to hold the industry responsible for benefitting from the “efforts, struggles and successes of black people”.
Spotify is adding an 8 minute and 46 second silence to certain playlists and podcasts today, the amount of time Derek Chauvin kneeled on the neck of George Floyd.
In other news, Virgil Abloh has responded to criticism after he only donated $50 to the bail fund of protestors. In a now deleted Instagram story, the Off-White CEO said the $50 “was part of a matching funds movement of friends”.
In related news, it is small, independent businesses who are leading fundraising efforts for black lives matter, not bigger companies. With the exception of Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty, Stella McCartney and Glossier, most bigger brands are making blank ‘supportive statements’ with little action. Smaller brands who are donating to Black Lives Matter causes include Asai, Jonathan Cohen, Planet X and Catbird.
