From the outside, TikTok seems to be thriving – but the toxic nature of the app is no secret!
Parent company of TikTok, ByteDance has been valued at a staggering $100bn, according to new reports. The app also boasts over 2 billion downloads in the past few months.
But, only a few days ago, TikTok users rallied together, changing their profile pictures to the black power symbol in solidarity against the unfair censorship of black users.
In what was named the #ImBlackMovement, the founder of Black Lives Matter Utah, Lex Scott, called upon users to unite against the issue that TikTok disproportionately censors black users for creating educational videos about racism.
On the day, users celebrated that their feeds were dominated by posts from black creators, and Scott told CNN that “watching the entire feed filled with black creators and artists is beyond emotional. This is powerful.”
TikTok has faced similar accusations in the past, for banning LGBTQ+ content, and suppressing posts by ‘ugly’ or disabled users.
What do you think of the most recent TikTok allegations?
