TikTok has come under fire for suppressing videos of “ugly, disabled, overweight and poor” people for the purpose of growing the app and retaining users according to a report from The Intercept.
Leaked internal documents from the Chinese company show moderators being told to censor political content, and ban users that “harm national honour.”
Among many disturbing instructions we see restrictions on features such as “abnormal body shape, chubby, obvious beer belly, obese, or too thin” as well as “ugly facial looks” such as disfigured face, lack of front teeth, and seniors with too many wrinkles.
Reasons for these restrictions in the documents are explained as not suitable for recommendation to new users, as it seems “less fancy and appealing”.
Apparently, when asked about these guidelines, TikTok has responded that these were anti-bullying measures, however this is not reflected anywhere in the documents the rules seem merely a way to grow the app.
Lizzo also recently called out the app for removing videos of her wearing bikinis…
It’s true the content seems more inclusive now, but is TikTok genuinely image positive?
