Yesterday, Maria Grazia Chiuri unveiled her latest SS21 collection for Dior in an atmospheric presentation. The show space had strong religious undertones, from collaged stained glass windows by artist Lucia Marcucci, to a choral score.
The clothes themselves had a boho feeling featuring the flowing skirts, sheer fabrics, and macremé that we’ve come to expect from Chiuri. And the clothes didn’t stick to one colour palette – there was almost every toned down vintage-esc colour that you could think of.
So what did the critics have to say about the collection?
Well it’s fair to say the reception was mixed. @Pam_boy tweeted: “Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior is – feminism stance aside – ugly, uninspiring, and evidently product-centric.”
Fashion critic Louis Pisano also wasn’t blown away by the collection, taking to Instagram to say: “I knew we were doomed from the moment I saw the paisley panties in the first look.”
And it was a similar response for Journalist Ayo Ojo who said: “Let’s leave these prints for Paria Farzaneh please. It’s more genuine when she uses it and her pieces actually look beautiful.”
Whilst the reception online wasn’t the best, Dior womenswear is performing well commercially under Maria Grazia Chiuri. From 2017 to 2019, Dior’s revenue and profit had been steadily increasing, so whilst this might not be the most innovative collection of the season, it’s predicted to sell well.
