MARC JACOBS CLOSES NYFW WITH A BANG!

Marc Jacobs Closes NYFW with a Bang.

Music By: Cabaret Nocturne – Blood Walk.

It’s CULTED with your 60-second FASHION BLAST.

Marc Jacobs debuted his Fall 2020 collection in New York last night.

Vogue’s Olivia Singer and many other attendees were quick to comment that the show blew their minds.

In a surprising break for the designer, the collection features very few bold patterns and most items are ready-to-wear. The collection as a whole is made up of a sea of pastel colours, blacks, whites and reds, and the clothes have a serious prep school vibe. This runs through into the venue which looks kind of like a high school basketball court.

The show kicked off with ‘punk ballerina’ Karole Armitage taking to the spotlight to give a short but high energy performance. Karole was followed by dancers who looked like they’d had one too many red bulls.

Robin Givhan said “Marc Jacobs left me with an empty notepad. I just wanted to take it all in.”

Miley Cyrus also made a cameo in a black bra and pant combo.

In his show notes, he said he wanted to showcase the quality and construction of the clothes without losing his sense of individuality, going back to his minimalist roots.

So guys, what did you think of the Marc Jacobs show?

THURSDAY NEWS RUSH FEATURING PHOEBE PHILO'S RETURN TO FASHION

Thursday NEWS RUSH Featuring Phoebe Philo’s Return To Fashion.

It’s CULTED with your morning NEWS RUSH.

After Phoebe Philo left Celine in 2017 and broke our hearts, we wondered when we’d see her again. But it seems rumours have surfaced that she may be making her solo move into the fashion industry.

Stay tuned for more on this story later.

In other news, Gucci has opened a pop-up store in Chicago in time for the NBA all-star weekend.

The shop will feature Gucci’s new rainbow GG Psychedelic Collection, which is debuting in-store and online this month.

Now, we are all eagerly waiting for Rihanna’s 9th album and it seems it may happen sooner than we think. During New York, Fashion Week Rihanna told ‘The Cut’ that she’ll be spending valentines day in the studio. She said “I’m so excited actually. I can’t say who I’m working with, but it’s somebody I’ve been wanting to work with for a long time… Okay, I’ll tell you. [It’s] Pharrell.”

Finally!

Jillian Mercado made history on Sunday night.

Jillian has muscular dystrophy and uses a mechanical wheelchair to get around. She made her New York Fashion Week debut in The Blonds Fall 2020 show and it was STUNNING.

To round off today, we reviewed last night’s Marc Jacobs show. Stay tuned for the full video which will be posted later today.

First, we have the Daniel Arsham X Bang & Olufsen Beoplay A9 4th Generation Speaker.

Inspired by Arsham’s fascination with space, the design comes from one of his original ‘bubble-textured’ oil paintings. The speaker is blue and white, with moon crater textures and has touch control features.

*Leyla reacts and guesses the price*

Up next, Vetements has just released a new pair of jeans.

The jeans are a washed black colour and have the Vetements gothic font logo embroidered across the front.

Next, The Nike Air Jordan New Beginnings pack is dropping this week, but apparently you can’t buy these online.

They will be releasing exclusively in Chicago via in-store raffles, in places such as RSVP Gallery and Jumpman Chicago.

The pack comes with 2 designs, with red and white colourways. Little is known about where you can buy these shoes, but official images were released last week and they are believed to be dropping this weekend for the NBA all-star weekend.

Is Savage X Fenty Tricking Customer’s into Subscriptions?

Music by: Octilary – Chill Trip Beat. Image credit: Instagram – Savagexfenty.

It’s CULTED with your 60-second NEWS BLAST.

Rihanna’s brand Savage x Fenty is being accused of deceptive marketing.

The advertising watchdog Truth in Advertising has filed complaints to the FTC and California regulators. They said the brand “ensnares consumers into unwanted monthly charges” through a membership plan that’s difficult to opt-out of. They claim Savage x Fenty deceptively promotes discount prices that are only available to VIP members.

We took a look at the website, and the ‘VIP’ pricing is the first thing you see with the regular price underneath. It seems you can’t click the regular price option and it’s unclear how to purchase these items without this hidden membership cost.

CNBC reviewed the site and said that when you add an item to your shopping bag, the membership is also automatically added. When this happens the price doesn’t change so it looks like the membership is free.

The only way of knowing it adds additional charges is if you click a small ‘learn more’ button.

Even worse, the only way to cancel the nearly £50 a month membership is to call the company directly.

So guys, do you think Rihanna’s aware of this?

Let us know below.

Wednesday NEWS RUSH Featuring Savage x Fenty Scandal.

It’s CULTED with your morning NEWS RUSH.

First up, Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty line is being accused of deceptive marketing. The brand is being criticised for tricking customers into signing up for a £50 monthly subscription that’s difficult to get out of.

Stay tuned for more on this story later.

In other news, the French government has passed new legislation banning the destruction of unsold goods –  and yes this includes clothes.

The law has now been approved and will call for clothing brands to donate unsold goods rather than destroy them.

Up next, Pornhub stars made headlines by walking the runway in New York fashion week. Berlin brand Namilia sent the stars down the runway to deconstruct Asian stereotypes in porn and make the statement that porn isn’t ‘existentially male’.

Moving on, Rebecca Black took to Twitter to reveal the negative effects that her song ‘Friday’ had on her mental health. 9 years after its initial release, Rebecca recalled dealing with depression, bullying and rejection from the music industry.

Here at CULTED, we’re sending all our love her way.

And finally, it’s Wednesday which means we’re taking a look at the week’s latest drops. The full drops video will be up later today, featuring Nike, Daniel Arsham and more.

It’s Sam with CULTED.

Happy Humpday and make sure to check back soon for more in-depth news!

Remembering Alexander McQueen.

Music by: Simon Sizer – Aethra.

It’s CULTED.

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of Alexander Mcqueen’s death.

McQueen was a legendary designer that created pieces like no other. He was romantic and rebellious, creating clothes no one had ever seen before. Remember when he used robots to spray-paint a dress while the model spun around on the runway?

Today we will reflect on more than 20 years of his work, highlighting some of our favourite moments.

Let’s start with our favourite show ‘Voss’ SS2001.

The audience sat around a mirrored cube, representing an asylum. The models emerged, wearing hospital headbands paired with gothic and theatrical pieces.

The show finale remains unbeatable. Once the lights went down and the runway was empty, a murky glass box began to drop its walls. It revealed a nude woman covered in live moths, wearing a mask and breathing through a tube, an unforgettable scene inspired by Joel-Peter Witkin.

Next, we have ‘Horn of Plenty’. Autumn/Winter 2009, a collection McQueen designed just before turning 40.

The clothes were a parody of haute couture. Models in bold silhouettes, high platforms and Leigh Bowery inspired makeup walked around a huge black rubbish tip. Combining high fashion with trash. Mcqueen said just before the show: “The turnover of fashion is just so quick and so throwaway…  there is no longevity.” He never failed to shock his audience and push creative boundaries. In fact, that was his objective.

Finally, we have his Plato’s Atlantis show, SS 2010 branded ‘the show that changed the future of fashion’ by Dazed. Plato’s Atlantis is probably one of the most legendary shows to date.

Inspired by humanity returning to the oceans, the show explored themes of evolution. To really enforce the future-facing theme, the show was broadcast live on SHOWstudio. As masses of people rushed to see it, the site crashed. Nevertheless, it symbolised a crossing between the industry and the digital world, demonstrating fashion’s eagerness to always adapt. Through this, McQueen cemented his status as the world’s most visionary designer.

We could honestly talk about his work for days, no one will ever compare to Alexander McQueen, he was truly in a realm of his own.

Which McQueen moment was your favourite? Let us know below.

Patrick McDowell’s New Eco Venture.

Music by: Hicap – Kendrick Lamar Type Beat.

Giorgio:

It’s CULTED with your 60-second FASHION BLAST.

New York fashion week is well underway and is receiving criticism for its lack of sustainability.

The environmental impact of fashion shows is small in comparison to production and clothing manufacturing. But the making of brand-new clothing for each collection is contributing to the fashion industries damaging effect on the climate.

A small collection of eco-friendly designers are doing their part to help tackle the climate crisis and change the fashion industry for the better.

Today, we have Patrick McDowell with us, to talk a bit about this issue.

Patrick:

Hey, I’m Patrick McDowell, and I’m a sustainable fashion designer based in London.

I work with reclaimed fabrics and crystals from places like Burberry and Swarovski, and ethical knitwear from Wool And The Gang.

This London Fashion Week I’ll be doing a swap shop created by me. I’ll be showing a collection, but I’ve made nothing new.

I think Fashion Week’s a platform to show new ideas, and I’m hoping that’s what we can do with this swap shop.

I think it’s really important, as a designer, to show that you don’t actually need to create new things, but you can still be really creative, and create an interactive space that people can engage with at fashion week.

You can register for the British Fashion Council’s positive fashion exhibition through their website, and I hope that we can encourage other designers to take new steps and create systemic change.

Giorgio:

So guys, what other things can be done to make fashion weeks more eco? Let us know your thoughts below.

MONDAY NEWS RUSH FEATURING THE OSCARS 2020

Monday NEWS RUSH Featuring The Oscars 2020.

It’s CULTED with your morning NEWS RUSH.

First up – history was made at the Oscars ceremony last night as Parasite, a South-Korean satire, won best picture. This is the first time a foreign-language film has won the award.

More on the winners later.

And of course, how could we talk on the Oscars without highlighting some of our best and worst dressed, including Billie Eilish (again), Timonthée Chalamet and more.

Stay tuned for this video.

A star-studded Tom Ford AW20 show took place on Friday in LA. The front row had everyone from J.LO to Renee Zellweger, Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore and many others. Best described as 70s glitz and glam, the collection included luxe velvet, elegant prints, sequins and feathers. Swoon!

Another show worth mentioning is definitely the Palm Angels AW20 show in NY. Bumping music and strobe lights enforced the rave vibe, yet the show maintained a sophisticated edge. We love.

Selfridges managing director, Simon Forster, has exited the business after just over one year at the helm. The reason for his departure has been explained as a loss of confidence in his leadership. Forster’s predecessor Anne Pitcher has stepped in as interim boss.

It’s Sam with CULTED.

Have a great Monday, and check back here soon for more in-depth news!
