Rihanna’s brand Savage x Fenty is being accused of deceptive marketing.
The advertising watchdog Truth in Advertising has filed complaints to the FTC and California regulators. They said the brand “ensnares consumers into unwanted monthly charges” through a membership plan that’s difficult to opt-out of. They claim Savage x Fenty deceptively promotes discount prices that are only available to VIP members.
We took a look at the website, and the ‘VIP’ pricing is the first thing you see with the regular price underneath. It seems you can’t click the regular price option and it’s unclear how to purchase these items without this hidden membership cost.
CNBC reviewed the site and said that when you add an item to your shopping bag, the membership is also automatically added. When this happens the price doesn’t change so it looks like the membership is free.
The only way of knowing it adds additional charges is if you click a small ‘learn more’ button.
Even worse, the only way to cancel the nearly £50 a month membership is to call the company directly.
So guys, do you think Rihanna’s aware of this?
