Roberto Cavalli is one of those brands that everyone knows, but maybe not everyone knows why they know it. One of the major players of early 00s fashion, the Italian fashion brand used to dominate magazines, editorials and paparazzi pics, thanks to its low-waist silhouettes, maximalist ethos and ability to translate the unique energy of that time.
Since then, though, the brand’s current collections seem to have slightly dropped off the radar of mainstream fashion – with stylist and celebrity pulls often opting for vintage Cavalli instead of reaching for their newer pieces. It’s the same story on resale sites – searches for vintage Cavalli amass thousands of results, often coupled with comment sections that look something like ‘#y2k #parishilton #00s #vintagefashion #itgirl’.
This week, we’re taking a look at what we love about vintage Cavalli, and what we’d do if we were to play creative director for the day. From trawling the archives to newfound celebrity collaborations, take a look at our musings below.
According to goodonyou.eco, the site dedicated to evaluating the humanitarian and environmental impacts of brands, Roberto Cavalli has been given a sad face, 1/5 in most areas, and stamped with their death-sentence: a “we avoid” rating. This is why, in resurrecting Roberto Cavalli’s luxury Italian fashion brand, I would opt for an environmentally focused rebrand. Jumping on the eco-conscious collection bandwagon, investing in sustainably-sourced materials and taking on more skilled methods of hand-crafting garments would prove the brand’s dedication to change. Tbh this is something a lot of luxury fashion brands could do to make their products seem more attractive, because who wants a £300 t-shirt that’s potentially been made in a poor work environment?
90s Roberto Cavalli is a very big part of the made-up scenarios that I play in my head before I sleep. Bondage bomber jackets, laced leathers, trompe l’œil bodycon dresses that slip to reveal corsetry, and intricate detailing on worn denims… it’s just… chef’s kiss. Ever since Y2K started taking over fashion, resale platforms like Grailed, Depop, and Vinted have been flooded with Cavalli and its several hundred diffusion lines. Moreover, currently trending brands such as Diesel and Ludovic de Saint Sernin are proving that sex sells again in 2022. That’s exactly what Cavalli always did best – create sexy clothing that celebrates bodies instead of camouflaging them – and bringing back this look is exactly how I would revamp the brand.
Roberto Cavalli specialises in making the jungle… well, chic. Adorned with various animal prints (with leopard at the forefront), Cavalli’s garments are reminiscent of a David Attenborough special on the African Savannah. Unfortunately Rob, it’s not the 00’s anymore. Leopard print is out, but there is still hope. If I was creative director for the day, I would construct a TikTok campaign honing in on the Y2K depop girlies. With 8.2B views on TikTok, there’s clearly still a massive market for Y2K style amongst Gen Z users, and with a focus on the (believe it or not) once prominent leopard print craze, I hope to breathe some life back into Roberto Cavalli. Comprised of several Y2K oriented creatives, the campaign would see them styling various Cavalli pieces and reviewing them – from there it’s only a matter of time before the brands relevancy will begin to repair, and every depop girlie across the globe will want to get their hands on a Cavalli piece.
Sorry Sam – when I think of Cavalli, I think of leopard print. Vintage Roberto Cavalli is hot property nowadays – whereas the brand’s more recent output tends to go under the radar, outside of the Perfume department, that is. If I were to become creative director for the day, I’d tap back into the brand’s archives – think J-Lo, early Kardashian looks and even Lenny Kravitz, who all championed the brand’s playful maximalist aesthetic back when it was at the top of its game. It would be fun to recreate their looks with new collections that took reference from the vintage animal-print pieces and bring back that early 00s energy – whether that’s by collabing with Tiger Queen Carole Baskin, or by staging a star-studded studio shoot with clashing animal print backdrops.
