After months of anticipation and speculation, Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada finally debuted their first joint womenswear collection for Prada. When two fashion powerhouses like this come together there are always fears that the 2 will clash, but Simons and Prada seamlessly integrated their two styles.
New York Times critic Vanessa Friedman said whilst the debut “will not upend the industry”, they laid “the groundwork for a path forward. One that resonated beyond clothes.”
The show was a digital presentation which was simplistic yet effective.
The footwear was the first thing that stood out: sharp kitten heels in a range of striking colours, and the clothes themselves were fresh, harkening back to Miuccia’s edgier past, with almost everything being branded with an oversized Prada logo triangle. Perhaps a comment on hyperconsumerism?
The collection started off with the basics: plain trousers and shirts in whites, blacks, and purples, before moving on to become more experimental. We saw sleek trench coats that had a street style vibe, as well as knits and shirts with post-apocalyptic-like cut-outs. The collection fused 1950s skirts with signature Raf Simons graphic items, such as hoodies and it worked seamlessly.
With COVID-19 impacting this presentation, the industry will be looking to see how Simons and Prada head forward – and we’ll be eagerly awaiting.
