It’s CULTED with you 60-second NEWS BLAST.
The fashion industry, an industry plagued by systemic racism is now being called out by the very models which uphold it.
Yesterday, top model Joan Smalls released an IGTV expressing the struggles she’s faced being a Black and Latina model. She called the industry “tone deaf”, recounting experiences of being told her hair would make a campaign too ‘ethnic’, and blames the industry for feeding the beast of “racism and inequality”.
Model Jourdana Phillips also took to Instagram to share her sentiments on racism in the industry, saying “to the agencies, brands, photographers, casting directors if there is a genuine desire to align yourself with anti-racism, then the voices of models of colour should be heard without fear of losing our livelihoods.”
Duckie expressed her frustrations with the industry on twitter saying “the fashion industry needs to do more!! Ya’ll literally use me to promote your products”.
And model Anok Yai also shared her experiences on O mag stating “Black models should not have to teach working professionals how to deal with our hair and skin day in and day out. Educate yourself and come prepared. It’s your job”
It’s finally fashion’s time to enact true change. We’re waiting.
