For a whole generation of final year students, the coronavirus pandemic has derailed their plans and turned their course upside down. Their degrees have been jeopardised and their job prospects post-graduation are at risk.
UAL students Aziza Kadyrova, Gina Grünwald, and Nur Syahadah took matters into their own hands when they started the campaign #pauseorpay. The campaign calls on art universities to pause their courses or reimburse students for the hours of teaching lost during the pandemic.
For the lucky ones, contact with tutors has continued over Zoom or they’ve made use of materials and equipment from home, but for art students specifically the reality of working without the studios and support of the university is less than ideal.
‘Include students in the decision making process’ is just one of the many posts shared across their campaign. Students also wrote an open letter discussing the visa expiration date of October 2020 for international students whose graduation ceremonies have been indefinitely postponed.
