It seems that the fashion industry is finally being held responsible for “communicating racism through cultural imagery”.
Prada has been instructed to follow a new plan to tackle racism after an investigation by the New York Commission on Human Rights. The plan requires Prada to undergo sensitivity training. It includes ‘racial equity training’ for all its NY employees, as well as the brand’s Milan executives, including Miuccia Prada!
Prada has now appointed a diversity and inclusion officer, after the recommendation from the commission who will review “Prada’s designs before they are sold, advertised or promoted in any way in the US”.
This comes after civil rights lawyer Chinyere Ezie tweeted a picture in December 2018, showcasing Prada’s racially-insensitive window display. The New York City Commission on Human Rights sent Prada a “cease and desist” after seeing Chinyere’s tweet. Following this and the filing of an official complaint, Chinyere said she has been in a positive conversation with Prada since January 2019.
The snap seemed to encapsulate a year’s worth of racially insensitive scandals from Gucci’s blackface jumper to Dior’s Sauvage campaign.
Do you think this will finally drive positive change in the fashion industry?
