Meet The Artist Creating Surrealist Portraits Of Pop Culture Icons.
Music by: Taliyah Kao.
It’s CULTED with your 60-second ART BLAST.
Portrait painting dates way back, but Austin Call is one artist who’s vamping up the art tradition. Austin creates surrealist portraits of pop culture icons, from Rupaul’s Drag Race alum, to Travis Scott and FKA Twigs. You can also send in your own photograph for him to turn into a “post-pop” work of art – he even did an insane portrait of me!
Austin told CULTED that he developed his unique style after a lot of time and experimentation. He continually experiments with subject matter, media, and the overall process and said “when [he] feels excited or intrigued, [he] hones in.
He wants people to feel confused when they look at his portraits, messing with people’s heads and prompting them to ask “why would you make someone look like that?”
But how does he choose who to portray? “In a plethora of ways;” he says, “inspirational people, people that don’t look like me, [and] people that I want to know more about”
So if you’re a fan head over to Austin’s website duhrivative.com to get a custom piece created, and don’t forget to let us know what you think of his work in the comments.
