Yesterday it was announced that Matthew M. Williams will be taking over as Givenchy’s new creative director. Since the departure of Clare Waight Keller in April, Williams was on top of everyone’s list as next in line, and it’s easy to see why.
The designer behind the influencer-hyped brand Alyx will put Givenchy in touch with Gen-Z, bringing with him a loyal following of hypebeasts, and pushing the couture house in the direction of streetwear. I mean, his brand was even mentioned in a Drake song.
With a finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist, Williams could be set to spearhead Givenchy’s departure from the refined and romantic aesthetic engraved by Waight Keller, describing Givenchy’s new era as one “based on modernity and inclusivity”
Williams’ appointment marks the second time a streetwear designer has led a heritage brand, since Abloh’s Louis Vuitton tenure and we can’t wait to see his first collection in October.
But while the designer is said to be taking over both menswear and womenswear, this has got us thinking – who will be in charge of haute couture?
