In lieu of the current climate, many collections have opted for a softer, more relaxed approach for their Pre-Fall 2021 collections, but not Mathew M. Williams for GIVENCHY.
His collection brought out the kind of outfits that one would want to be wearing to a club in Berlin, or as an extra in the Matrix. Sharp and sleek, this collection was anything but subtle. Using a mostly neutral palette, with the occasional splash of red, olive and pink, Williams featured leather (lots of it) and metallic studs in his outfits to give it a punk-like feel.
This collection mixed formal and casual, complimenting sharp menswear suiting with a studded crossbody bag emblazoned with the fashion house’s logo.
To no one’s surprise, accessories played a big part in this collection. Williams gained notable traction as co-founder of 1017 ALYX 9SM, the upscale streetwear brand where he made his signature metallic belts and vests a global phenomenon. Bringing aspects of that to GIVENCHY’s Fall 2021 collection, models wore hardware inspired accessories and bags attached with glamorous sparkling straps.
Footwear was also a chief feature in this collection, ranging from thigh-high rubber boots to metal-studded slippers. The collection included a reworked version of the classic GIVENCHY bomber and a fresh take on the GIVENCHY little black dress, this collection showed Williams’ ability to honour the roots of GIVENCHY while keeping the brand both modern and different.
In a recently released statement, Williams spoke of the collection saying “Ultimately, what I am trying to do in the GIVENCHY collections is reflect today’s world,”. Following his appointment in June 2020 and the mixed reception he received with his debut SS21 collection, expectations were high, but it’s clear, we’re living in Mathew M Williams’ world.
