John Galliano just unveiled his latest co-ed collection for Maison Margiela with a captivating AW20 runway.
The first looks were accompanied by a violin soundtrack and a voice explaining that after a long day, we have the night – a time to tell stories. Today’s story, he said, “is the story of love”.
The collection featured the coming together of different entities. Contrasting colours, textures and fabrics were combined to make layered garments. Blazers were merged to create one jacket or deconstructed into capes and embellished with faux fur. Galliano was inspired by Bavarian suits, and hiking through forests and greenlands.
Key pieces were the restored wicker baskets sourced from the 30s through to the 70s.
The collection saw a return to heritage and slower fashion, with many pieces up-cycled, and the tanning and farming processes for the bags being fully sustainable.
The collection also saw the return of the iconic Maison Margiela masks with a delicate new twist, as well as the split-toe tabi boots.
“It’s a voyage, a discovery” Galliano said about the collection, and we definitely enjoyed the journey.
