“Love Is Your Colour Today!”

George Floyd, a 46 year old black man, died in police custody on Monday 25 May in the city of Minneapolis. The same evening a video went viral, showing an unarmed George Floyd pinned to the ground groaning “I can’t breathe”, as a white policeman knelt on his neck. Since then, Black Lives Matter demonstrations have taken place across the world demanding justice.

We attended the Black Lives Matter protest in London’s Hyde Park in solidarity with the movement. Protesters had this to say:

We cannot live in a society that was built on racism, and that was built on the after effects of colonialism and slavery. We are still living those after effects.

We’re here for ‘Black Lives Matter’, and you can be an ally by actually staying plugged into the movement, and not jumping on a social media bandwagon.
‘Black lives matter’.
We are tired! We are tired. Every single day we are tired. There’s racism here. They’ll say ‘it’s not a UK problem’, it’s a UK problem. In the corporates, in the schools, in the drama schools, it’s a UK problem.
We wanna be equal, like, everyone wants to be equal, everyone is human. There shouldn’t be discrimination ‘cause people are different, like it’s… You know what I mean, like we’re all of the human race. My skin colour’s no different from these people. If we all get shot we all bleed, like it is what it is.
I hope that we get our rights. Black people matter. Black people matter. We will not die. How many people will die until we get our rights? We are important. Our culture is important. We matter. All humans matter. All lives matter, when black people’s lives matter.
‘Justice’.
When do we want it?
’Now!’
What do we want?
‘Justice’
When do we want it?
’Now!’

We have the amazing tool of social media to keep things alight. This is why it became so big in the first place. It needs to be ins… embedded. Just as much as racism is embedded in institutions, anti-racism should be embedded now.

We work in your NHS, yeah? We clean your streets. We feed you. And so do you. In humanity, god almighty, there is no colour. Yeah, the colour is love. Love is your colour today. You are not black, you are not white, you are the colour of love.
We have to speak up ‘cause it’s been going on for too long now. It’s too much. It’s a modern society we live in, stuff like this shouldn’t even be happening anymore. We shouldn’t be out here protesting.
We shouldn’t have to fight for these rights, we’re human just like everybody else.
‘Your silence is racism’.
People can’t see us as equals, and we’re still getting killed up in these streets. Like, people need to understand that we are not lower, nobody else is lower, we are all equal. And we’ve been fighting this fight for how many years, and we’re still here fighting it ‘til this day and we won’t stop, that is it.
Equality is the main thing to achieve. That everyone understands that black lives matter, it’s not just about all lives. It’s mainly black, ‘cause this is what.. this is the time that we’re in.
Police need to realise that we don’t want to be afraid of you. We want to be working in partnership with you, so you need to be willing to learn. And willing to express yourself, and realise that society won’t wait. We are angry and we are here, and we’re here to stay.
‘Cause we are the voice, we are the change. This is the start of something long. That this, this is the fight we have to fight today.
Protest, donate, don’t stop making noise. Make noise until police know. Make noise until police, in their heads, get it right. If they’re men, they took an oath to protect us, not kill us. They took an oath to protect the society and not kill us. We are important human beings. Everybody is important. Black people are important. Thank you.
