A few days ago, Lil Nas X made history by being the first gay black man to win a Country Music Association Award.

Lil Nas X dressed the part in a blank fringe outfit, accepting the award for the song of the summer “Old Town Road” and beating country music moguls Blake Shelton and Garth Brooks.

Lil Nas said he was “so happy this song was accepted because it bridges of two polar opposite genres.”

“I’m happy it’s gotten respect from both places”.

Earlier this week, Lil Nas was also the first openly gay man to make Forbes top-earning country act, and his win marks a progressive step in the world of country music.

A genre known for leaving out gay and black artists.

Country has certainly not welcomed the rapper with open arms.

And Lil Nas’s song was actually removed from Billboard’s country chart because Old Town road did not “merit inclusion on a country chart”.

Well, the rapper says he hopes his story “open doors” for other young queer people and with these consecutive wins – we definitely think he will.
