Levi’s have announced a month of workshops and events to celebrate Black History Month this October, all held at their concept store in London. The program is titled #RootedinJoy, and is spearheaded by SAWUBONA – Levi’s own employee resource group comprising its Black and North African employees. The month-long series of workshops and events offer a celebration and fostering of UK Black culture, magnifying talent and creativity from the community throughout October.
Collaboration is key, and as part of the celebrations, floral artist Hazel Gardiner is enlisted to reimagine the workshops’ physical space: Levi Haus. Once the project is completed, visitors will be able to purchase individual plants in aid of CODE1 – a community focused on uplifting young people in Tottenham.
As part of the program, Uptown Yardie, an independent lifestyle and shoe brand taking inspiration from the founder’s Jamaican roots, will be running an activation with Levi’s to produce a series of bucket hats made from recycled denim. A following workshop in collaboration with CODE1 is set to invite 22 young people from the community to Levi Haus for “a day of creativity and black joy”.
#RootedinJoy presents an opportunity for celebrating the innovation, laughter, and self-expression that underpins Black culture and community in the UK. Find out more about the program, and how you can get involved, here.
