“The game of fashion musical chairs stops for no pandemic: Johnny Coca is leaving Mulberry” tweeted Vanessa Friedmann late last night.
Coca joined Mulberry in 2015, after working with Phoebe Philo at Celine as the head design director of leather goods, accessories, shoes and jewellery. Under Coca, Mulberry underwent a logo revamp, international expansion, and a shift to a more affordable range.
Coca was also very focused on sustainability. Among the initiatives was the launch of a 100% sustainable leather Portobello tote, as well as urging people to send back bags to Mulberry’s Somerset factories to be repaired.
Mulberry has said they have started the search for a successor, and the industry is already speculating.
@PAM_BOY tweeted a poll, asking who we want to take over at Mulberry, “the cursed british house nobody cares about except Alexa Chung”.
Over 500 people voted and overwhelmingly almost 60% voted for Molly Goddard. Other options included Rejina Pyo, Roksanda Illincic and Huishan Zhang.
Who do you think should take over? Leave your thoughts below.
