Following Glenn Martens’ appointment as creative director of Diesel back in October 2020, we finally have some new material from the Y/Project figurehead and it’s every bit as fulfilling as we could have wished for. Diesel’s SS22 collection comes as a short film featuring signature denim pieces with trippy visuals.
Ella Snyder, dressed in denim jeans and a playful white tee, is our protagonist, with a hard-hitting video following her through a party, across streets to more futuristic hallways, and into a block red room. Denim pants laden with pockets, cowboy boots and more modern takes on tailoring are highlights, while Trompe L’oeil trousers and illusion-printed tights add some polish to the collection. The video starts – and ends – with Snyder leant back against a wall appearing to be inebriated, dropping us straight into the psychedelic, motion sickness-inducing videography as if we’re experiencing some kind of out-of-body experience.
Leon Vynehall’s soundstage makes for a compelling short film, enhancing already strong visuals and tying together what is a glowing debut for the Belgian in his new position at Diesel.
