Dries Van Noten, along with a group of other brands and retailers, issued open letter to the fashion industry yesterday asking for “a fundamental and welcome change that will simplify businesses”. The letter proposes “adjusting the seasonality and flow of both womenswear and menswear goods.”
Some of the names who have signed the letter include Craig Green and Marine Serre, as well as major retailers such as Selfridge’s and MyTheresa.
But what does the letter actually mean?
Rather than selling a swimsuit in winter in preparation for summer, it would mean that retailers actually sell clothes at the time of year when they are worn. In the words of Vanessa Friedman “what a crazy idea”!
They’re also proposing to move discounts to “the end of the season “to allow for more full-price selling”.
Sustainability was of course mentioned too, the plan is to reduce unnecessary products, as well as reviewing and adapting fashion shows.
Don’t you guys think this is the best time for brands and retailers to make changes like this?
