Dior AW20 – Empowering Message, Lacklustre Clothing

Maria Grazia Chiuri just debuted her latest collection for Christian Dior.
Chiuri continued her ongoing mantra of feminism and womens’ empowerment. There were massive neon signs hanging from the ceiling, displaying slogans such as ‘Consent’, ‘Women’s love is unpaid labour’ and ‘Women raise the uprising”. The show’s message couldn’t have been more topical given recent news surrounding Harvey Weinstein. While it was great to see an iconic brand like Dior using their platform for female empowerment, the message didn’t shine through in the collection.
Chiuri takes ready-to-wear very literally which has certainly boosted sales, and she does provide her customers with a complete wardrobe, which not many designers do.
We saw some expert tailoring and Dior craftsmanship, however overall, the clothes felt very one-note and repetitive. And the colour palette also left something to be desired.
We saw some fringing – a major theme this season, as well as black sheer tops, drawing our attention to the Dior bralettes underneath. Merchandise like the bras and signature belts became somewhat of a focus – which shouldn’t be the case with a brand as iconic as Dior.
Overall the collection felt dated, but the message certainly isn’t.
We just wish we saw more of the message reflected in the clothes.
How about you?
