Some music is made to be heard in the sun. And whilst we’re waiting for its return (in the UK at least), there’s no better way to hurry it along than with the sweet sounds of Drewmula. Pairing playful grooves with funk-heavy melodies, Drewmula’s music is already catching the attention of music fans everywhere.

Despite making music that feels firmly on the pulse of today’s scene, Drewmula also flirts with the past – creating nostalgia-infused tracks that possess a sense of timelessness. With his latest project, WITH LOVE, releasing on Friday, we caught up with the musician to talk through his journey up until now, dream collaborations and what tracks he’s loving at the moment.

Hey Drew! Talk us through your journey – how did you get started in music?
Hey! Wow, where do I begin? So, I was originally in a group called ‘Open Late’ for a couple years, then I decided to go solo, independently releasing singles up until last year, where I released my debut project ‘Chemistry’, then released more singles, became booked and busy, and now I’m here, releasing another short album, a more conceptual album, ‘With Love’.

What’s been your biggest pinch-me moment?
I’d say performing at the O2 Academy Islington late last year was the biggest ‘pinch-me’ moment so far. The energy was crazy and felt so surreal!

What’s the piece of work you’re most proud of, and why?
I’m most proud of ‘Chemistry’, my debut EP. I felt really fulfilled, and learnt so much about myself during the creative process.

Who would you say are your biggest creative influences, and how have they influenced you?
Lil Wayne, without a shadow of a doubt. His work ethic, his ability to approach any genre so well with his style of music, to intertwine his music with his image to cause such a cultural shift within the culture, influenced and taught me so many things about how I’d like to approach my own musical journey.

Can you guide us through your creative process?
Me and my creative partner Junior SSC tend to go back and forth with ideas when we’re in creative mode. My notes app is generally filled with nothing but ideas, waiting to be brought to life. On a more general scale, though, I tend to use music as a form of therapy, and don’t necessarily need it when I’m feeling happy. If I’m feeling happy, I’m out with my friends and actually living life – so I gravitate towards it when I need it. This new found balance has definitely helped my creativity process in the long run, and I’m really blessed to be around this energy.

Do you have anyone you’d love to collab with?
I’d love to collab with a few artists from the Altê scene doing their thing in the UK at the moment. Odeal and Gabzy are just a few to name.

Lastly, name five tracks you’re loving right now and why?

Dark Damz – Story

Lil Durk feat. Gunna – What happened to Virgil,

SahBabii – Step in the name of Love

L.A.X – Faster

Cleo Sol – One Day

I’m seriously loving all of these at the moment.
