Welcome to 2023: footwear has never looked weirder. Over the past few months we’ve seen some of the strangest footwear drops – from Christian Cowan’s Dipsy heels to MSCHF’s viral big red boots – but even we have to admit that none have been as wild as the pair of sandals we posted on TikTok this week. Our repost of a video by @overtimekicks which gained over 1.2 million views in a matter of days kind of divided the CULTED Community. Here’s what you had to say.
The TikTok itself, which featured a person sliding socked feet into a pair of heavy-duty metal sandals, wasn’t just crazy because of the unconventional style of the footwear itself; it was also because of the fact that they then walked vertically up a wall. Slotting the sandals into grooves in the side of a pillar, they worked as steps allowing the wearer to climb upwards.

Raising questions around function over fashion, people took to the comment section to debate the practicality of the sandals. Whilst some were fighting their corner, like user @t4ree6 who commented “The design is very human”, others were a little hung up on the comfort of the design, with @fullmoonyeah who said “thats hurting my toes”.

Plenty of people seemed to be hung up on how you actually wear the shoes, with @pfffffft asking “Sweet Jesus why is it not slipping 🙈” – because of the impeccable design, of course. Likewise, @baji_hairtie said “That toe grip is too strong”, trying to reason how the wearer was actually staying upright.
One user who had a pretty strong reaction to the design responded by simply commenting, “FlipFlops of Death…☠️😨” (via @alpha_octopus) and we have to say they do have a point. Whilst the flip flops might be practical they sure do look like something from Saw.

In contrast @toxiicpositiviity saw the more functional side, saying “All it needs is a heel strap and baby I’m climbing condos”. With a pair of these bad boys on, peeking through your favourite celebrity’s windows was never easier! Will you be copping?
