Balenciaga has announced it will be relaunching its haute couture line in July. The brand hasn’t done couture in over 50 years when Cristobal Balenciaga closed his atelier.
Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga’s current creative director, has wanted to relaunch couture since he first joined the house. Under Gvasalia, Balenciaga has become known for its meme-worthy looks. T-shirt-shirt, anyone? Or maybe the IKEA bag? Not that Couture.
The French Federation of Haute Couture has said it cannot confirm Balenciaga would be accepted into the elite body. To be fair, the federation also argued with Cristobal Balenciaga ‘the king of couture’ for years, Gvasalia is determined though and described the relaunch in a press release as a duty to take Balenciaga back to its roots.
Gvasalia has given us a taste of his abilities before -in 2017 he incorporated 9 couture looks into a ready-to-wear collection, and remember those massive gowns during SS20?
Although Cedric Charbit, Balenciaga’s CEO, said the move was not a marketing plan, they *are* looking at a new type of customer. And it seems people are interested -since the news dropped on Monday, the brand has already received a lot of requests (according to Charbit).
Not gonna lie – can’t blame them.
So, guys, do you think Demna can do haute couture?
