What went down on the set of Baby Queen’s new music video? If you responded to our open call back in May, then you might already know… Last month, we invited emerging creatives to get involved in an exciting new project: the making of South African, alt-pop star Baby Queen’s “Colours of You” music video with Converse.

The open call received more than a hundred applicants to work on the video in one of three paid roles: a Second Director Assistant, a Styling Assistant, and an Art Director Assistant, each shadowing industry experts on set and getting an insight into the industry’s secrets. Here’s what went down.

We met the three winners of our open call – Second Director Assistant Nicole Herrera, Art Director Assistant Ruby Edwards-Smith, and Styling Assistant Kathryn Allsopp – on Baby Queen’s “Colours of You” set, a space decked in coloured paper scrawled with motivational messages written and submitted by fans of Baby Queen. Baby Queen’s music is rooted within and born from her community of fans,  so she wanted to use her latest music video to support that.

The music video also invited a ton of extras on set, many of which were also fans, who danced, played instruments, and got their Converse sneakers signed by Baby Queen herself. Basically, the vibes were immaculate.

That wasn’t the only way Baby Queen’s fans got involved in the video, though. Ahead of the shoot, Baby Queen hit up her own socials to ask her Kingdom (as her fans are known) to vote on various creative elements of the video, from her hair and styling to the choice of Converse shoes she should wear.

Catching up with the trio of emerging creatives invited on set, we spoke with Styling Assistant Catherine who said “it’s such good energy, there’s a buzz!” Nicole walked us through the operations of a Second Director Assistant, shadowing Director Samuel for the day, telling us “I’m absorbing everything… It’s overwhelming but in the best way.”

Finally, we caught up with Ruby, who was working with the Art Department on set, who said “the energy’s really good, everyones so friendly! I’ve been lucky enough to work with Nicola the PD (Production Designer) – she’s amazing.” Take a look at Baby Queen’s “Colours of You” music video, created with Converse with the help of our brilliant emerging creatives, here.
