Live streams have taken over Instagram since the start of the pandemic. But for the likes of DJs and drag artists who rely on nightlife to make a living, live streams have become a temporary lifeline. It’s provided them with the opportunity to host their sets online to continue bringing in that dollar.
But music copyright claims are throwing a spanner in the works. Recently more and more artists have had their streams shut down due to copyright claims. London based DJ Die Arkitekt told us:
“It’s not the artists issuing these claims, it’s automatic detection. In my livestreams I avoid mainstream music as much as possible, and alter things like the pitch and tempo of any tracks that aren’t my own.”
A spokesperson for Instagram told Paper magazine:
“music rights are complex, and there are layers to the limitations in how we can allow people to include music in their Live videos.”
But this is pretty much all the info Insta has given, so with no clear guidelines it’s almost impossible for artists to avoid the issue.
