The CFDA held its annual awards on Monday afternoon, and this year’s winners represented “the most diverse group of recipients in the 39-year history of the awards” the council said in a statement.
Gabriela Hearst took home the award for American Womenswear Designer of the Year, with Kerby Jean-Raymond for Pyer Moss picking up the same award for Menswear. Telfar Clemens won the award for American Accessories Designer of the Year after the Telfar shopping bag exploded in popularity this year, nd Christopher John Rogers was awarded with American Emerging Designer of the Year.
In international fashion, Global Women’s Designer of the Year went to Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino, with Kim Jones for Dior scooping the same award for Menswear.
The winners were all selected by the CFDA Awards Guild, a group of “leading fashion journalists, stylists, and top retail executives”, and all of this year’s American designers are first-time CFDA award winners.
Coronavirus of course had an impact on this year’s ceremony which would usually be a star-studded affair. So instead of the usual red carpet and glamorous celebrations, this year’s winners were announced in a video by CFDA chairman Tom Ford.
